Nota d'usoIl verbo regalare corrisponde a “to give” o “to get”, con sfumature di significato leggermente diverse. In assenza di un particolare evento (Natale, compleanno ecc.) è necessario aggiungere la locuzione “as a present”, per specificare che si tratta di un regalo: Ho regalato una bambola a Jessica, I gave Jessica a doll as a present. L'uso di “to get” implica che il regalo è stato acquistato: Gli ho regalato un bel maglione per Natale, I got him a nice jumper for Christmas. “To give”, invece, può anche indicare un regalo creato dalla persona in questione, o già in suo possesso. Esistono inoltre i verbi “to gift” e “to present”. Il primo viene usato per lo più in contesti figurati: Sbagliando quel rigore, Jones ha regalato la coppa all'Arsenal, with that penalty miss Jones gifted Arsenal the cup. “To present”, invece, si riferisce soltanto a regali di una certa entità e viene usato di solito in contesti ufficiali: La signora Thomas ha regalato dieci nuovi computer alla biblioteca, Mrs Thomas presented the library with ten new PCs.
